Arrhythmias

Arrhythmias are disturbances of the heart rhythm: the heart may beat too fast, too slowly or irregularly. In children they can show up as palpitations, dizziness or fainting, and in babies often as restlessness, paleness or difficulty feeding.

Many rhythm changes in childhood are normal, such as respiratory sinus arrhythmia or occasional extra beats. Others need an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Because arrhythmias often come and go, an ECG in the clinic is complemented by a Holter monitor, which records the child’s heart rhythm for 24 hours or longer during everyday activities.

Diagnostic tests

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • 24-hour rhythm Holter monitoring
  • Heart ultrasound to rule out a structural heart defect
  • Advice on treatment options, starting and monitoring medication and, if needed, referral for an electrophysiology study
