Congenital Heart Defects

Congenital heart defects are differences in the structure of the heart or the major blood vessels that are present from birth. They are the most common type of birth defect and affect roughly 1 in 100 newborns.

They range from small holes in the heart (atrial or ventricular septal defects) that often close on their own, to complex defects that need surgery or catheter treatment and lifelong follow-up.

Melanie Karabouta worked for many years at specialised congenital heart disease centres in Germany and cares for patients from the newborn period into adulthood, working with pediatric heart surgeons and other specialists when needed.
